Elafonisos \u2013 NATURA 2000<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

One more reason to visit and fall in love with Elafonisos is its remarkable natural wealth and biodiversity.
This exceptional richness in flora and habitat has led the European Network of Protected Areas to include Elafonisos in the NATURA 2000 program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After thorough evaluation by environmental experts, the\u00a0Stroggyli wetland<\/strong>, the\u00a0coastal dunes<\/strong>, and several\u00a0endemic species<\/strong>\u00a0were found to exist exclusively in Elafonisos and, more specifically, at\u00a0Simos Beach<\/strong>\u2014the very location of Simos Camping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The natural landscape here consists of\u00a0dynamic and sensitive ecosystems<\/strong>, most notably the coastal\u00a0sand dunes<\/strong>.
Right after the shoreline,\u00a0low, shifting dunes<\/strong>\u00a0develop, characterized by loose, sandy soil and sparse vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A typical plant found in Elafonisos is\u00a0Ammophila<\/strong>, known locally as \u201cAgkathia\u201d, along with the endangered\u00a0Sea Daffodil (Pancratium maritimum)<\/strong>.
This stunning vegetation grows inland from the sea, forming\u00a0sandy hills up to 10 meters tall<\/strong>\u00a0on Simos Beach.
Ammophila dominates the top of the dunes, while the sea daffodil grows sporadically in clusters, blooming from underground bulbs.
Together, they form the\u00a0first and most crucial stage of dune stabilization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These white dunes are followed by\u00a0grey dunes<\/strong>, which are\u00a0permanently stabilized<\/strong>\u00a0and stretch further inland.
Their stability is maintained by a\u00a0permanent plant cover<\/strong>\u00a0made up of herbaceous and woody species that enrich the sandy soil with organic matter, making it darker and more cohesive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particularly striking part of the landscape lies in front of the Stroggyli wetland, where visitors encounter the\u00a0\u201cbeach thickets with junipers\u201d<\/strong>\u2014a truly rare Mediterranean sight.
Here grows\u00a0Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa<\/strong>, a type of\u00a0sea cedar<\/strong>\u00a0that is both unique and endangered in the Mediterranean ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The importance of all this vegetation is vital to the stability of the coastal environment.
If disrupted by human activity, the wind carries the sand inland, covering fields, meadows, and wetlands\u2014altering the ecosystem entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another point of interest in magical Elafonisos is its\u00a0birdlife<\/strong>, including\u00a0kestrels and lesser kestrels<\/strong>.
Mediterranean shrublands with evergreen broad-leaved plants and aromatic herbs provide nesting grounds for many species.
Thorny bushes serve as perfect natural shelters for their nests, while the birds feed on small mammals and reptiles from the surrounding terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
